Naar aanleiding van het Van Eyckjaar creëerden Björn Schmelzer en Graindelavoix een voorstelling met polyfonie als eresaluut aan het leven en werk van hun trouwe vriend Gerard Van den Acker, wiens vroegtijdige dood abrupt een einde maakte aan een beloftevol en opzienbarend Van Eyck-onderzoek.
Van Eyck Diagrams kreeg door de coronacrisis een nieuwe adem als langspeelfilm, niet alleen als hommage aan het universum van Van Eyck en als hulde aan zijn visionaire interpreet, maar ook als evocatie van de strijd die kunstenaars moeten leveren om gehoord, gezien en begrepen te worden.
Polyfonieportret, kunsthistorische documentaire, filosofische film noir of gewoon Vlaamse Covid comedy? Van Eyck Diagrams is dat allemaal en veel meer.

On the occasion of the Van Eyck year, Björn Schmelzer and ensemble Graindelavoix created a performance with polyphony as a salute to the life and work of their faithful friend Gerard Van den Acker, whose untimely death abruptly ended a promising and sensational Van Eyck research.
As a result of the current situation Van Eyck Diagrams was given new impulse as a feature film. It is not just a tribute to Van Eyck's universe and to his visionary interpreter, but also an evocation of the artist’s struggle to be heard, seen and understood.
Polyphony portrait, art historical documentary, philosophical film noir or just Flemish Covid comedy? Van Eyck Diagrams is all that and much more.

Als tegenhanger van Graindelavoix’ film Van Eyck Diagrams, toont De Bijloke in zijn foyer voor het eerst een selectie uit de legendarische schetsen en studies van kunsthistoricus Gerard Van den Acker. Het publiek krijgt een inkijk in het rijke, maar oneindig verstrooide archief van deze onderschatte kunstwetenschapper.
Van den Acker geloofde dat het mogelijk was om via een diagram de dialectiek van het beeld in het werk van Van Eyck in één oogopslag zichtbaar te maken. De diagrammen zijn tegelijk een vereenvoudiging en een verwikkeling van Van Eyck’s artistieke werkwijze. Ze overstijgen hun oorspronkelijk pedagogische doel en belichten een aspect van de kunsthistoricus als kunstenaar.

Together with the movie, a selection of the legendary sketches and studies of art historian Gerard Van den Acker will be presented in De Bijloke Foyer. Van den Acker believed that it was possible to make the dialectic of the image in Van Eyck's work visible at glance. The diagrams simplify as much as they complexify Van Eyck's artistic method. At the same time these diagrams transcend their original pedagogical purpose, transforming this underrated art historian into an artist himself.

DE MONTE VERGETEN / FORGETTING PHILIPPE DE MONTE - CONCERTFILM

Laat onder muziekliefhebbers de naam De Monte vallen en er volgt beslist een diepe stilte. Met als lijfspreuk Rien sans Peine bouwde deze workaholic aan een gigantisch oeuvre waarvan hij al bij leven besefte dat het in de vergetelheid zou geraken. Net dit besef, uit de tijd te zijn, maakt de moderniteit van De Monte en zijn weerbarstige oeuvre uit. Niet voor niets werd hij wel eens de 'Don Quixote van het Italiaanse madrigaal' genoemd. Björn Schmelzer en Graindelavoix ontvouwen in deze concertfilm een reeks composities waarin obstakels, miserie en mislukkingen, de kern van De Monte’s muzikale dramaturgie, centraal staan. Een uniek portret van De Monte als moderne mislukkingskunstenaar.

Among music lovers, drop the name De Monte and the result is a deep silence.
Armed with the personal slogan "No Pain no Gain!” (Rien sans Peine), this workaholic built a gigantic oeuvre, realizing already during his lifetime that it would soon be forgotten. It is precisely this awareness of his own anachronism that makes up the modernity of De Monte and his unruly oeuvre. No surprise he was called the ‘Don Quixote of the Italian madrigal’. In this concert film, Björn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix unfold a hidden line of amazing compositions in which obstacles, misery and failures shape De Monte's musical dramaturgy. A unique portrait of De Monte as a modern maestro of failure.
