De Cinema, the new place in Antwerp for independent films and all time classics, a collaboration between MuHKA Cinema Zuid and De Studio, is screening VAN EYCK DIAGRAMS on Wednesday 24 November 2021.
VAN EYCK DIAGRAMS is Graindelavoix's critical contribution to the Van Eyck Year in Flanders and at the same time the theatralisation of the group’s survival during covid...
Björn schmelzer about the film:"I think we have never been so near to what really interests me in the work with graindelavoix, not just performing 'beautiful' polyphony from the past, but including a critical stance(not without comedy or satire) towards artistic patrimony and the variety of exploitation, not only in commercial culture, but operating in an even more worrying way through politics and neoliberal ideology. Van Eyck functions as the signifier for all of them...There is of course also a naive attempt to save Van Eyck and his art, a yet unknown but much more subversive Van Eyck, through the forgotten research of art historian Gerard Van den Acker...There is polyphony here, but also art history, philosophy, comedy in the style of Thomas Bernhard, and the spectator will have a lot to ruminate on afterwards...Having some experience in making films in a tight schedule and no-budget, we decided together with our coproducers De Bijloke Ghent and Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen, to adapt the original music theatre production... As often in cases in which one is forced to accept a surrogate, it revealed itself as maybe more to the point than the original... The medium of film and the way we were forced to engage with it, opened up other possibilities which would be impossible in the theatrical version... This is probably the first real Flemish covid-comedy, at least the only one interspersed with some of the most crazy and breathtaking polyphony ever written..."

Björn Schmelzer over de film:
“Ik geloof dat we nooit dichter hebben gezeten op wat me echt interesseert in het werk met Graindelavoix: niet gewoon het uitvoeren van prachtige polyfonie uit het verleden, maar eerder het insluiten op een heel concrete manier van een kritische houding (niet zonder comedy of satire) tegenover artistiek patrimonium, en de variëteit aan exploitatie, niet enkel in de commerciële cultuur, maar vooral ook (en dat baart me meer zorgen) aan het werk via politiek en neoliberale ideologie. Van Eyck was hier het voorbije jaar de spilfiguur van...
We hebben uiteraard getracht, op bijna naïeve wijze, om Van Eyck en zijn kunst te redden; de nog onbekende, maar daarom niet minder subversieve Van Eyck, dankzij het in de vergetelheid geraakte onderzoek van Gerard Van den Acker...
Er zal polyfonie zijn, maar ook kunstgeschiedenis, filosofie, comedy à la Thomas Bernhard, en zal er veel zijn om op te herkauwen achteraf...
Omdat we intussen enige ervaring hebben in het maken van erg strak getimede no-budget films, besloten we samen met coproducenten De Bijloke Gent en Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen om de originele muziektheaterproductie om te zetten in film. Zoals vaak wanneer men verplicht is zich tevreden te stellen met een surrogaat, was het al gauw duidelijk dat een film hier misschien zelfs meer to the point was dan de originele theaterversie. Film als medium en de manier waarop we genoodzaakt waren het te gebruiken, opende andere mogelijkheden, die er niet zouden geweest zijn in een theaterversie.
Ik ga er prat op dat dit misschien wel de eerste Vlaamse covid-comedy is, en dat met de meest hallucinante en adembenemende polyfonie die ooit gecomponeerd is..."

Side program on 24 November (part I) and on 25 November 2021 (part II)ARIA, The Antwerp Research Center for the Arts, in collaboration with Graindelavoix, is organizing an introductory seminar in De Studio before the film screening and an online aftertalk, the day after, with keynotes by Austrian philosopher Robert Pfaller and Belgian sociologist Pascal Gielen, moderated by philosopher Marlies De Munck and introduced by Björn Schmelzer.We welcome everyone interested in the work of Björn Schmelzer and Graindelavoix, (performing) arts and politics, Jan Van Eyck and art history, the problematics of distance and nearness in art... ARIA, The Antwerp Research Center for the Arts, in samenwerking met Graindelavoix, organiseert een inleidend seminarie in De Studio, voorafgaand aan de filmvertoning, en een online nagesprek, met keynotes door Oostenrijks filosoof Robert Pfaller en Belgisch socioloog Pascal Gielen, gemodereerd door filosoof Marlies De Munck, met een introductie door Björn Schmelzer.
